CPR Myths That Could Cost a Life
When someone collapses in front of you, your heart races. You freeze. You question everything you thought you knew about CPR. But in those critical moments, taking action matters more than perfection—and unfortunately, dangerous myths often stop people from trying at all.
As a nurse and CPR instructor who’s seen both the trauma of waiting too long and the miracles of quick bystander action, I’m here to set the record straight. Let’s bust some of the most common CPR myths that could cost a life.
💭 Myth #1: “I might hurt them if I do it wrong.”
Truth: Doing something is better than doing nothing.
You might crack a rib, but broken ribs heal—the heart doesn’t restart on its own. The worst outcome of CPR is that it doesn't work. The worst outcome of doing nothing is death. Which would you choose?
🧓 Myth #2: “CPR is only for old people or heart attack victims.”
Truth: Cardiac arrest can happen to anyone—babies, teens, athletes, pregnant women, you name it.
From drowning to electrical shock to sudden cardiac conditions, CPR saves lives of all ages every day. That’s why everyone, especially parents and caregivers, should be trained.
⏳ Myth #3: “The ambulance will be here soon—I’ll just wait.”
Truth: Brain damage starts within 4 to 6 minutes of the heart stopping.
Even the fastest EMS response might be too late if no one starts chest compressions. You are the first responder until the professionals arrive.
💋 Myth #4: “You need to give mouth-to-mouth.”
Truth: For adult sudden cardiac arrest, hands-only CPR is just as effective.
If you’re not comfortable or trained to give rescue breaths, just push hard and fast in the center of the chest at 100–120 compressions per minute (like to the beat of "Stayin’ Alive" 🎵). Don't let the fear of mouth-to-mouth stop you.
🧠 Myth #5: “I already took CPR once—I’m good.”
Truth: CPR guidelines change every few years, and your skills fade faster than you think.
If you haven’t practiced in a while, it’s time to refresh. Would you trust your rusty memory in a life-or-death moment?
