What You’ll Learn
Build the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to perform PICC line insertions safely and confidently. This course combines evidence-based instruction, ultrasound guidance, sterile technique, and supervised practice on vascular-access training models.
1. PICC Fundamentals
Review PICC indications and contraindications, patient assessment, informed consent, catheter selection, and vein anatomy.
2. Ultrasound-Guided Vein Selection
Learn upper-extremity vessel identification, ultrasound assessment, vein measurement, and appropriate insertion-site selection.
3. Insertion and Sterile Technique
Practice maximal sterile barrier precautions, equipment preparation, local anesthesia, modified Seldinger technique, catheter advancement, and securement.
4. Tip Confirmation and Complication Prevention
Review catheter tip location, available confirmation methods, documentation, dressing care, troubleshooting, and prevention of infection, thrombosis, malposition, and other complications.
How the PICC Line Course Works
1. Complete the Prerequisite
Participants must complete our Ultrasound-Guided IV (USGIV) course before attending the PICC Line Insertion Class.
2. Register for the PICC Course
After completing the prerequisite, select an available PICC class date and register online. Course instructions will be emailed to you.
3. Learn and Practice
Review PICC indications, patient assessment, vein selection, ultrasound guidance, sterile technique, insertion steps, tip confirmation, and complication prevention.
4. Demonstrate Your Skills
Practice PICC insertion on training models with instructor guidance. After meeting the course requirements, receive a certificate of completion.
